Building the Future, Honoring the Past
Maui Construction, Inc is proud to be a family-run, locally owned and operated General Contracting company with roots deep in Maui's bedrock. Owner and President Edward Vares has not only his clients' expectations to exceed, he has three generations of the family business to represent.
Beginning in the early days of World War II, Edward's grandfather, Adam Vares, combined his knowledge of plumbing, explosives, and blasting to create Maui Plumbing, providing wells, cesspools, and sewer-and-waterlines to Maui, Molokai, Lanai and Oahu. His expertise with explosives led to contracts with the Federal Government and Territory of Hawaii, blasting subterranean fuel tanks on Oahu for the military, and running the first powerlines from Kahului to the crater of Haleakala, and from Kahului over the West Maui Mountains

During the 1960's and 1970's, his son Norman Vares (US Army 1958-1962) applied the experience he gained as an apprentice and foreman with his father's company to his position as foreman with L & F Plumbing. As one of the largest plumbing companies in Hawaii, L & F Plumbing contracted mechanical and sitework for major subdivisions and hotels, completed large-scale civil projects for both the County and State, and employed over 100 full-time union employees. In the late 1970's, Norman Vares bought L & F Plumbing, and from it created Maui Construction and Mechanical (Lic.# AC-4202). Combining the primarily large-scale mechanical work with a larger and more diversified fleet of heavy equipment, Maui Construction and Mechanical grew to accommodate both private sector and government projects, including roads, bridges, and waterlines. In 1998, after a successful career and thousands of completed projects, Norman retired and closed Maui Construction and Mechanical. He is currently Maui Construction Inc's Chief Estimator, bringing with him over 50 years of valuable experience.
As his father before him, Edward Vares began his career working for the family business. Beginning in 1986, Edward was hired on as one of Maui Construction and Mechanical's heavy equipment operators, and quickly expanded to work in maintenance and operations of the company. In 2000, after 2 years in Nevada, Texas, and Georgia with the Army Reserve, Edward returned to Maui, and with his father's well-wishes, created Maui Construction, Inc. Drawing on his training as a Combat Engineer, Edward specializes in residential, commercial, and industrial construction, and relies on his fleet of heavy equipment to get the projects completed. With the exception of an 18-month deployment to Iraq from 2004-2005 (OIF 2, Sergeant with Maui's 411th Army Reserve Engineer Battalion), Edward and Maui Construction, Inc. have continued to thrive and grow, becoming a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Business, and an approved contractor for the DHHL, USDA, and all County, State, and Federal agencies. More than just the technical skills to complete projects have been passed from father to son; a commitment to client satisfaction has also been proudly passed from one generation to the next. As the years have passed, the names may have changed, but the company's mission has remained the same: building the future while honoring the past.
